Dealer Notes
Nückel left behind his medical studies to pursue an interest in painting and engraving - in the latter field he used lead rather than wood, seemingly on the basis of affordability although it does impart a distinct character to the work. Along with Lynd Ward and Frans Masereel he was a pioneer of what came to be called ‘graphic novels’ (although the present title is in fact his only contribution to the genre), with his work marked by a psychological depth and focus on the individual’s plight.
