Considerations on the Present State of Navigation by Steam c/w Extract from a Letter on Steam Navigation

Book Description
30pp, uncut and unopened, boards, cloth spine. Pages foxed, boards a touch grubby and worn. Captain Sir John Ross (1777 - 1856) was an exponent of navigation by steam and in 1827 his article in support of steam navigation was published in Blackwood's magazine. By 1833 Ross had completed his second expedition in search of the North West passage. He had set off in 1829 in the steamship 'Victory', which had served as a ferry between Liverpool and the Isle of Man, but it became trapped in sea ice and had to be abandoned. By 1843, when 'Considerations' was published, Ross was the British Consul in Stockholm which post he held from 1838 to 1846. At the beginning of 'Considerations' Ross refers to the article in Blackwoods which is 'now republished in the addenda' and is present here within the pagination.
