The Aktieselskapet det Oversøiske Compagnie was incorporated in Oslo, Norway, in 1899; it was wound up in 1921 “owing to huge losses caused by sugar speculations” (typed note to rear endpaper). The initial aim of the company was “to exploit and develop the possibilities of Norwegian shipping and trade with the Far East”, and as the company grew offices were opened throughout the world: Hong Kong, Canary Islands, India, New York, Brazil, Chile, South Africa, Java, Singapore, Great Britain, North America, Tientsin, Shanghai, Australia, and New Zealand.
