TWO VOLUMES. 8vo. (7.6 x 5.3 inches). EARLY EDITIONS. Alice's adventures in Wonderland is Fifty-Eighth Thousand, Through the Looking Glass, Tenth Thousand. Both volumes Illustrated throughout with forty and fifty line engravings by John Tenniel. Original thin tissue guard to the frontis of Looking Glass still present. Some thumbing and marking to several pages but overall very good. A neat previous owners inscription, dated in the year of publication, to the half title of Alice. Attractive copies in recent half red morocco leather bindings. Deep red cloth on boards. Spines with raised bands, the compartments ruled, lettered, and decorated with gilt stamps of The Mad Hatter and playing cards. Black coated endpapers. All edges gilt. The original publishers red cloth boards and spines bound in at the rear of each volume. Cloth with gilt circular devices on boards, each with a different character from the books inside, and triple gilt ruled borders. The cloth from the original bindings is rubbed and marked but included for completeness. An attractive pair of early editions of these classic books.
