Dealer Notes
Murchison, one of the founders of the Royal Geographical Society and its President on many occasions, made these addresses at meetings of the Society in 1864 and 1865. Both begin with obituaries for Society members, including Lord Elgin, Captain William Allen, Richard Thornton, John Speke, Sir Robert Schomburgk, William Baikie, Robert FitzRoy, and others. These are followed by an overview of geographical discovery for the year, notably Gifford Palgrave’s journey in Arabia, Wallace’s travels in the Malay Archipelago, Richard Spruce on the Amazon, and an extended discussion of the exploration of Australia.
