Book Description

Second edition. 8vo, pp. [x], 231, [1], incl. engraved title page and 38 woodcut coats of arms (31 hand coloured) + engraved armorial frontis: lacks pp. 233-251 (sections on Innes of Court and Chancery) and 7 (of 8) plates. New calf spine, five spine bands, lettered in gilt, boards rubbed and scuffed, corners rounded. Trimmed, but not affecting text, red edge stain faded. New endpapers. Toned, some foxing, small losses to first blank, early faded ink scribbles to recto of frontis, plus occasional marginal annotations in black ink, including notes, scoring and doodles (pp. 12), plus 31 (of 38) arms attractively hand-painted. Fair, but charming.
Dealer Notes
A compelling annotated second edition copy (despite lacking plates and pages) of Matthew Carter’s treatise on honour and its hierarchies, which for many years proved “the most popular text-book with all who studied heraldry”; written during his incarceration by Parliamentarians, Carter emphasised to readers that “in this declining condition of Honour, nothing is more requisite than the means of its preservation,” intending his book as a brief and accessible guide. This copy certainly engaged one reader-student at least, featuring brief marginal reminder notes and scoring, plus two related doodles (of a Baron’s coronet and a stag courant), and with 31 arms carefully and vibrantly hand-painted, seemingly attempting to reproduce Carter’s descriptions. Just charming.
