Small quarto. Manuscript, ink on paper. [1], 180ff, [16 further blank leaves]. With c.40 albumen-print photographs, CDVs, cabinet cards and occasional tourist mementos, inserted at corners, or loosely included, and numerous pencilled, ink and/or wash sketches of military positions and technology. Loosely inserted are eight lengthy ALS from the author to his father, composed during his travels and shortly after his return. Contemporary half-roan, marbled boards. Lightly rubbed to extremities, boards, fading to spine. A lively and extensive manuscript journal penned by Hon. Victor Alexander Yorke (1842-1867), Lieutenant in the Royal Horse Artillery, the son and 6th child of Admiral Charles Philip Yorke, 4th Earl of Hardwicke, on an official tour of military inspection in France and Germany between July 5th and August 24th during summer of 1867. Included is much social, historical and military detail of the author's trip to Paris, Strasbourg and Luxembourg. After 'permission...at last arrived to visit the different places of interest in France' in mid-July, special attention is paid on a trip to the Austrian departments of a military exhibition in Paris, where they are 'shewed' around by 'Baron Ebner'; with several sketches added of an 'Austrian Reflector', 'Austrian field gun', and 'Baron von Ebner's Torpedo'. Inscribed at the end of this journal is a note from the author's father: 'This was the journal of my beloved son - Victor...during the months of July & August 1867, was official tour of inspection to France - & Prussia - He died suddenly on the 25th of December - what a loss!'
