Publisher's original green cloth, decorative gilt spine & inset to cover. Bumping resulting in losses to the head and tail of the spine, extremities rather bumped, some stains and scuffs to rear board. With ownership & armorial bookplates to front pastedown as well as presentation bookplate from T. R. Clapham of Austwick Hall to the Giggleswick School Museum, 1884. With 1870 pamphlet 'A Double Dilemma in Darwinism' tipped in to ffep, together with two signed tipped in letters, one dated 1887. Two further letters signed from Morris tipped in to rear of frontispiece. As well as three letters from Rev. G. Style at Giggleswick tipped in to rear pastedown & rear endpaper, one damp stained. Illustrated with sixty colour plates. Ownership inscription of I. R. Clapham, Custwick Hall to title page. An excellent first edition of the first volume in the series, complete with numerous letters from the author.
