Book Description
DOCTOR’S WIFE? A diary for 1916, possibly written by a doctor’s wife, living in or near Penzance, Cornwall. On February 11th she writes that “the operation has taken place, Kenneth going up to Redruth (?) But not taking part in the operation.” There are good entries for most days. The diary continues, written on the ‘cash received’ and ‘memorandum’ pages, from 1st January to June 22nd 1917. It is written in a Maltine Manufacturing Company Diary, which has medical adverts at the end. Dark green morocco cloth, in very good condition. A loosely inserted note lists ‘Excursions for Summer 1899', including to St Ives, Pendeen, Helston, Mullion, and St. Just. There are two rather faded photographs of scenery. ~ Born on the 1st January, October 11th the 46th anniversary of her marriage. Friends Margie and Winnie (birthday July 16th). Colin (son? Born September 5th), Tea at Mrs Cawley’s, the Miss Barlowe’s, the Miss Millett’s (Dr Lea and one or two others were there). Walks, the pantomime, Mothers’ Meetings, visiting invalids, friends at Stable Hobba (about a mile from Penzance), drawing room redecorated, Missionary Service at St Paul’s, to St Ives by train, Land’s End by motor car, makes gooseberry jam, picnic on the beach. Life appears to continue undisturbed with no mention of the war.
