Dealer Notes
Altick, The shows of London, pp. 235-52. William Bullock (1773-1849) traded as a jeweller, income from which allowed him to indulge his passion for collecting. He founded a museum for his collection of natural curiosities in Liverpool, and when he moved to London in 1809 built the Egyptian Hall on Piccadilly to house it. The displays included items brought back from Captain Cook’s expeditions, and Napoleon’s travelling carriage, purchased from the British government in 1815 following its capture at the Battle of Waterloo. This brochure was sold at the museum to visitors, to provide information concerning the exhibit. The frontispiece depicts the capture of the carriage, and the text describes the circumstances of its capture, Napoleon’s fate, and also provides a list of other Napoleonic spoils exhibited with the carriage.
