Rare Books and the PBFA

Collecting rare books is a hobby that can bring you joy, knowledge and satisfaction. Whether you are interested in a specific subject, author, genre or period, you can find rare books that suit your taste and budget. But how do you start a rare book collection? Here are some tips to help you on your journey.

Learn the basics of rare books. Rare books are not necessarily old or expensive. They are books that have some special value or significance, such as first editions, signed copies, limited editions or fine bindings. You can learn more about the terminology and criteria of rare books by reading guides and glossaries online  or by consulting books about book collecting.

Find your niche. Rare books cover a wide range of topics and genres, so it can be overwhelming to try to collect everything. It is better to focus on something that you are passionate about or curious about. You can choose a theme (such as travel, history, science fiction), an author (such as Jane Austen, Ernest Hemingway, J.K. Rowling), a publisher (such as Penguin, Folio Society, Easton Press) or a style (such as illustrated books, leather-bound books, pop-up books).

Research your market. Once you have decided what kind of rare books you want to collect, you need to do some homework to find out where to buy them and how much they are worth. You can browse online catalogues and databases of rare book dealers , visit book fairs and auctions, join book clubs and societies, and talk to other collectors and experts. You should also compare prices and conditions of different copies of the same book before making a purchase.

Care for your collection. Rare books are precious objects that need proper handling and storage to preserve their value and beauty. You should keep your books away from direct sunlight, moisture, dust and insects. You should also avoid writing on them or using adhesive tape on them. If your books need repair or restoration, you should consult a professional conservator. Finally, you should catalogue your collection and keep records of its provenance and history.

Collecting rare books is an exciting adventure that can enrich your life in many ways. By following these tips, you can start your own collection with confidence and enjoy it for years to come.
