A very very good set of the monumental and definitive biography of Sir Winston Churchill contained in eight volumes.
Official biographers Randolph Churchill and later Sir Martin Gilbert who took up the work following Randolph's death in 1968, had full use of Sir Winston's letters and papers as well as carrying out research in the many hundred of private archives and public collections.
The eight biography volumes are illustrated.
All the books are First Editions, First Impressions in very good+ or near fine condition with dust jackets protected in clear, removable covers.
Volume I Youth 1874 - 1900 - Heinemann 1966
The binding is straight with a little movement, the boards clean and the lettering on the spine bright. The end papers and pages are free from tears and inscriptions. Minor shelf wear to the board edges. The top edge fully retains its original red tint. The unclipped dust jacket has creases to the top edge of the back cover.
Volume II Young Statesman 1901 - 1914 - Heinemann 1967
The binding is straight and tight, the boards clean and the lettering on the spine bright. Minor shelf wear to the fore and bottom edge of the boards. The end papers and pages are free from tears and inscriptions. The top edge retains its original red tint. The unclipped dust jacket has a scratch and slight nibbling to the top edge of the front cover, nibbling and a minor tear to the bottom edge of the front cover, and small tears to the top edges of the spine and back cover and to the bottom edge of the back cover.
Volume III 1914 - 1916 - Heinemann 1971
The binding is straight with a little movement, the boards clean and the lettering on the spine bright. The end papers and pages are free from tears and inscriptions. The top edge retains its original red tint. The clipped dust jacket has slight nibbling to the top and bottom edges of the front cover, spine and rear cover.
Volume IV 1917 - 1922 - Heinemann 1975
The binding is straight with a little movement, the boards clean apart from some grazing to the front board and the lettering on the spine bright. There is minor shelf wear to the top and bottom edges of the boards. The end papers and pagers are free from tears and inscriptions. The top edge retains its original red tint. The unclipped dust jacket is in near fine condition with a sunned spine, nibbling and a tear to the bottom edge of the spine and sunning to the bottom edge of the front and back covers.
Volume V 1922 - 1939 - Heinemann 1976
The binding is straight with a little movement and the lettering on the spine bright. Minor grazes to the front and back boards, The end papers and pages are free from tears and inscriptions. The top edge retains some of its original red tint. Minor rubbing to the fore and bottom edges. The unclipped dust jacket is in good condition with toning to the edge of the front and rear returns, crease marks to the front cover and to the spine (slightly sunned at the base), nibbling to the bottom edge of the spine, a small tear to the top edge of the back cover, and two small white marks to the back cover.
Volume VI Finest Hour 1939 - 1941 - Heinemann 1983
The binding is straight with a little movement, the boards clean and the lettering on the spine bright. The end papers and pages are free form tears and inscriptions. The top edge retains most of its original red tint. Minor rubbing to the bottom edge. The clipped dust jacket is in near fine condition.
Volume VII Road To Victory 1941 - 1945 - Heinemann 1986
The binding is straight with a little movement, the boards clean with a small scuff to the bottom edge of the front board and the lettering on the spine bright. The endpapers and pages are free from marks, tears and inscriptions. The top edge retains some of its original red tint. The dust jacket is in very good condition with wear to the top corner of the front cover, a small nick and tear to the top edge of the front cover, a small nick and tear to the top edge of the spine and nibbling to the bottom edge of the back cover.
Volume VIII "Never Despair" 1945 - 1965 - Heinemann 1988
The binding is straight and tight, the boards clean apart from minor shelf wear to bottom edge and the lettering on the spine bright. The end papers and pages are free from tears and inscriptions. The top edge retains some of its original red tint. The unclipped dust jacket is in very good condition with some markings to the front cover and some nibbling and a couple of nicks to the top and bottom edges.
We have described fully (warts and all) . However this is one of the best sets we have seen, far superior to most, and would be a fine addition to a collection or library.
Will be dispatched, fully insured and carefully wrapped in bubblewrap and a cardboard box.
