Book Description

A remarkable series of unpublished letters, 1835 and 1836, relating to the Anglo-Spanish Legion, a British volunteer mercenary force serving in the First Carlist War in Spain. “... men have been known to have suffered amputation of both legs in one day - others lost their feet - most that died, died raving mad ! - the streets were one continual scene of funerals - 40 and 50, at one time, were borne along nearly naked on a plank of wood - and pitched promiscuously into a pit, near one of the convents - others were thrown upon the ground, and some earth scratched over them - then the arms and legs of them would be seen days often protruding - and in the end an abominable stench filled the atmosphere.”
