Book Description

Printed by John Bell, Strand, London, 1794. Full leather tree calf binding. Gilt lettering on red patch to spine, gilt decorations to spine. 7.75ins x 5ins, [viii], 114pp plus 3pp plates containing 20 heraldic emblems on tiles and two figures. The first letter was read to members of the Society of Antiquities in February 1788, the second letter was read on May 29th and June 5th 1794. In the interval between these two dates the author changed his name "by His Majesty's permission" from John Henniker to John Henniker Major. To the top of the title page is written "Job Mathew Esq, with Mr Henniker Major's compliments". There is a signature of a previous owner to the front free endpaper. There is staining / browning to many of the first 60 pages. Externally the spine has two small areas of worm damage resulting in loss of leather. Despite these defects this is an early scarce title on an unusual subject.
