Giuseppe Tucci (1894-1984) Italian Orientalist, Archaeologist, Adventurer and Scholar, Lecturer at the University of Rome, specializing in Tibetan culture and the history of Buddhism. Ippolito Desideri (1684-1733) Italian Jesuit missionary in Tibet. He entered the Sera Monastic University where he studied with Tibetan monks and scholars, accepting aspects of Buddhism which he did not see as contradictory to his own faith, being the first known European to deeply comprehend the language and culture of Tibet.
