Book Description
The Holkham Bible Picture Book was originally at Holkham Hall in Norfolk until its acquisition by the British Museum Library in 1952. There are 231 images that relate to events displayed in the Book of Genesis, the Gospels and the Book of Revelation/Apocalypse together with, in place of the full text, captions in Anglo-Norman French part prose part verse. The Commentary examines the historical context, the techniques and painting style, the wider artistic content, other illustrated bibles, the connection with the Dominicans, the London context.The Commentary includes a folio by folio description together with the language and its translation.
