Celebrating 50 years of book fairs

Book Description

Printed for the author by R. Newcomb and Son, Stanford, 1811, one of 50 large paper copies. [There were also 250 ordinary copies.] Half maroon leather binding with original paper covered boards. Six raised bands to spine, gilt lettering to compartment two, gilt decoration to other compartments. Original paper labels to front and rear boards (giving title and stating price to be eight guineas). Large folio, 23.75ins x 15.75ins, [viii], 234pp, errata page plus 11pp plates. Large number of pedigrees within the text. There is a 2pp index of pedigrees at the end of the book. The principal places covered in this volume are Casterton Parve, Casterton Magna, Empingham, Essendine, Horne, Ketton, Pickworth, Ryhall, Tickencote and Tinwell. The page entitled "To the Reader" explains that although this is part two it is being printed before part one which was still in preparation. As it turned out part one was never finished and this volume is all that was published. Armorial bookplate to front pastedown. Spine and corners are a later replacement. Bookbinders ticket stating "restored by Blair Jeary, Burghley House" to base of front pastedown. Edges of boards somewhat rubbed and worn. Some discolouration to endpapers but overall a VG copy of a scarce title. Nb very heavy book, would be very expensive to post overseas.
