THE GHOSTS OF MY FRIENDS
Book Description
Undated, but book dates to circa 1910
The Ghosts of My Friends, was a popular Edwardian-era novelty autograph book and Parlor game where participants create inkblot "ghosts" from their signatures. The book was designed as a playful twist on the popular autograph albums of the early 1900s, blending the hobby of autograph collecting with the contemporary fascination with spiritualism. Participants use a fountain pen and sign their name in wet ink along a vertical crease or fold in the page. The page is then folded back upon itself, blotting the signature to create a symmetrical, Rorschach-like inkblot image, which resembles a "ghost" or some other figure, such as an insect or a frog. The book consists primarily of blank pages made from a paper suitable for blotting, which a number might be filled with unique signatures and their resulting "ghosts"
The book is a small slim format measuring just under 7 inches tall, this example is fully used with around 48 pages of “Ghost Signatures”,
