Book Description

Illustrated with 22 plates, 20 of them (including the added engraved title, as frontispiece) tissue-guarded colour lithographs with **hand-coloured enhancements**, drawn by the author. Original brown cloth, ruled in black on front, blind on rear and lettered in gilt on spine; minor creasing at spine ends, small "splash" at front. Just the beginning of cracking to hinges, and one or two places in text block; text and plates clean and tight; a few pencilled notations on recto of rear free endpaper. A bright copy from a heritage library, with bookplate, small in accession number at foot of preface page, and round embossed stamp on p.9. Near fine.

Westwood was the first Hope Professor of Invertebrate Zoology at Oxford University, a member of the Linnaean Society and president of the Entomological Society of London. A skilled artist, he usually illustrated his own works with richly detailed and anatomically correct drawings; this work has plates “… in which every decidedly authenticated British species of Butterfly is illustrated together with the preparatory states of nearly all the species …”
