Dealer Notes
William Howell was a lawyer and historian who matriculated and became a Fellow of Magdalene College, Cambridge. His Medulla historiæ Anglicanæ was first published in 1679, and was frequently reprinted. However it is this so-denominated sixth edition that was first illustrated, as the title reads ‘the better to imprint on the memory’ (see photos). Broca was a binder about whom we know tantalizingly little, however he has achieved fame through being the executor of the designs by Sarah Prideaux (1853-1933). Broca is known as a neat binder, and excellent finisher, as can be seen in this example. Both Broca’s bindings, and the illustrated Medulla Historiæ Anglicanæ are uncommon on the market, all the more so in such good condition.
