Book Description

C1870s. With 'Violet Foxcroft and date' to top of original grey printed wraps (Violet was the daughter of Edward T. D. Foxcroft). A little fragile, with parts of the spine missing, front cover detached, light foxing and browning to both covers and loss to rear cover as seen in photos. Foxing to endpapers, otherwise clean and bright pages with light spotting, mainly to margins, to sporadic pages throughout the book. Date of publication uncertain, [1876 or 1878], with the name of the London publishers 'W. Kent & Co' featured before Penny's on the cover when the actual title page simply gives 'Frome: W. C. & J. Penny.'. iv, 80pp. 'The Worthies of Somersetshire' was the subject of a Paper which was read at a Meeting of the "Frome Association of Church of England School Managers and Teachers," and afterwards at a Meeting of the "Bath Literary Club" in the year 1876. The present Pamphlet is expanded from the Paper; and that it may be the means of inducing many inhabitants of Somersetshire to study and appreciate the careers of these distinguished men that the County has produced is the earnest wish of The Author'.
