Rubaiyat

Book Description
First Edition Thus. 19.7 x 25.7cm red cloth with gilt stamped titles and decoration to the front and spine. Top edge gilt, other edges uncut. xv(i), (151)pp, plus a tissue guarded colour frontispiece and 75 line drawn plates by Edmund J Sullivan. In original dust jacket with a price of 15s net to the rear panel.
The boards have been well protected by the dust jacket and are clean and bright with unfaded titles and decoration. There is a hint of fading to the cloth at the top of the spine where corresponding to the area of dust loss and just a touch of rubbing to the gilt. Internally the book is very clean and without name, inscription or bookplate and just some toning to the free endpapers, mainly where the dust jacket does not reach. The dust jacket, which is now protected in a removable, clear cover (not shown), is toned to the spine and has a number of losses, mainly to the top 7 cm of the spine but with much smaller losses to the foot of the spine, top edge and corners. There are also a few closed short tears to the top edge. A really lovely copy of this strikingly illustrated Rubaiyat the illustration for stanza XXVI being the basis for the Stanley Mouse ad Alton Kelly’s illustration for the eponymous 1971 live album by the Grateful Dead.
