Watercolour, measures 4 1/4" x 5 3/4". Mounted, not framed. Sir John Tenniel's drawings fr the 'Alice' books of Lewis Carroll have, on the whole, remained uncoloured. In 1922 sixteen illustrations were coloured by Harry Theaker and these Macmillan used as the basis for a successful merchandising programme. In 1993 Macmillan commissioned Francine Black to paint the drawings hitherto uncoloured and to do so in similar colours to those used by Theaker. These were to add to the number of coloured images available for merchandising. Macmillan took the imprints for these paintings directly from the original blocks held in the British Museum. These blocks had been engraved by the Dalziel brothers from the drawings which Tenniel had done for the first editions of Lewis Carroll's books. This is a rare opportunity to acquire artwork related to Macmillan's publications of Lewis Carroll's famous work.
