OLD GLOBE LODGE 1826; THE LOYAL RUTLAND LODGE 1833.
Book Description
Two highly unusual freemasonry manuscripts from the early part of the nineteenth century. ONE: Quarto. It opens “Members Names, when admitted by whom proposed and by whom seconded,” and runs from 1815 onwards. It contains variously information on names, residence, when admitted, and profession; for example Sam Waddington, Fell monger, Scarborough. It also sometimes gives age, and proposer. In this way the apparently first 138 members of the lodge are listed, as there is then a title page Nov 21 1826 Old Globe Lodge Established. There is also on the preceding page a note “A Supper will be held on Monday the 12th of [?], and agreed by the undermentioned members that each should be liable to a forfeit of a bottle of wine if they make known or disclose to any other person members or aforesaid or what condition or expense the supper aforesaid consists on or about…”. The next section is entitled Propositions and Makings, and lists new members, their joining dues and proposers. There is a further title page, now reading The Loyal Rutland Lodge 1833, after which follows minutes of their meetings, ending 1837. The remaining part filled in from the other side of the notebook) lists contributions by name and week from 1833-1835. In total, approximately 115 pages. TWO: 8vo. Minutes of the Loyal Rutland Lodge Scarboro, dates July 2nd 1833 onwards until 1841. Approx 175 pages filled out, without blanks. The minutes are becoming more detailed now, and they include motions and resolutions carried, such as their search for a new lodge building, who has the signs and passwords of their respective office, that x should be fined for late attendance, and so on.
Dealer Notes
A FASCINATING INSIGHT into the social history of a lodge, one that gives sufficient detail to be able to compare it with the town records of Rutland and Scarborough today and piece together who was in the lodge. Would make an unusual really excellent source for social history on the threshold of the Victorian era, or of course for the history of the freemasons.
