Dealer Notes
A fantastic association copy of Lawrence Binyon’s English Watercolours, presented by Graham Greene to his wife Vivien in the publication year and affectionately inscribed in his minute hand: “My darling – never more so than on our 12th Christmas. 1939.”; despite this fondness, by winter 1939 Greene was involved with Dorothy Glover. This book survived the destruction of the couple’s Clapham Common house in 1940, was salvaged by Graham and sent to Oxford, where Vivien and their children spent the war.
This copy subsequently became a fan copy in 2009, having featured in Ann Gate’s 2004 ‘Vivien & Graham Greene Centenary Catalogue: Books from Grove House, Iffley Turn, Oxford’ for Waterfield’s Antiquarian Booksellers: it is extra-illustrated with a clipped newspaper photograph of Vivien Greene and includes related ephemera pasted and laid in.
