First Edition, (xxiv) + 775 + (52) pages including engraved title with dedication to, and portrait of, Pope Gregory XIV, hardcover, folio, bound in embossed vellum, ms title on spine, binding a little rubbed and there is a split starting to show on front hinge, but otherwise hinges tight and firm, some tannings to pages but not throughout, good condition, Provenance: with the bookplate of Anthony Howe Denney, A. K. C., M.A. [(1913-90), Denney was a British photographer, art connoisseur, and collector of books] and with the early ownership signature on the front free endpaper is “J. A. Jeremie”: this is the characteristic signature of the distinguished Cambridge alumnus James Amiraux Jeremie (1802-1872), in Aedibus Populi Romani, Apud Georgium Ferrarium, Rome, 1591. * not given in Adams, nor this edition in the BL Catalogue. Latin Text. Additional provenance: James Amiraux Jeremie (1802-1872), was the Professor of Classical and General Literature at East India Company College in Hertfordshire; and was later, for twenty years, the Regius Professor of Divinity at the University of Cambridge, as well as being the Dean of Lincoln, holding the two latter posts concurrently for six years. A highly accomplished bibliophile, the Very Reverend Dean Jeremie “collected a magnificent library of the best editions of the classical authors of many different languages” (Dictionary of National Biography).
