The catalogue has a total of 1,068 entries. The importance of the books included in the seventeenth century lies in the belief that these might have been the textbooks that could have been used during the first century of the University’s existence, that is, ca. 1611-1711. Each entry has complete bibliographic information, with brief description in simple and general terms. For works, which are available in English reference sources, a lengthy discussion of the content has been provided and proper credits are cited. This will be useful since most of the books are in Latin and Spanish and few in Portuguese, French and Italian. Several entries have important notes and features such as ownership marks stamped on the title page or in other parts of the book, which may allow the researchers to trace the origin of a particular volume and who was or were its original owners. It also includes an index of the authors, titles, cities, and printers of the 19th century. Entries are arranged alphabetically by authors, with the physical description of the materials, the number of copies available in the UST Library, and the present condition of the books. Annotations for each entry have also been provided to guide the researchers in their quest for the contents. The last part of the catalogue is the list of books with no dates. Appendices are also included: (A) Reprints; (B) Photocopies; (C) Bibliography of the UST Internment Camp; and (D) Brief history of the UST Printing Press. Author and Title indexes were added together with some interesting illustrations to make the book more informative and attractive. The UST Filipiniana rare collection is considered one of the richest of its kind in the Philippines. It is a repository of storybooks created by great minds pertaining to the culture and civilization of the Philippines, the land and its people, history, language and literature, arts and sciences, commerce and industry, government and politics, religion and philosophy.
