First edition. Folio. Pp [viii], LXVIII, [viii], xvii, [i], 234. Frontispiece, and engravings to text at the head of each apostle, viz: Peter; Paul; Andrew; James; John; Philip; Bartholomew; Matthew; Thomas; Simon; Jude; Matthias, and Luke. Large folding plate showing the tree of the founding of the church facing page 1. Early signatures: William Bunyeate [?] and Greg Tamlyn to front pastedown; John Tamlyn to recto of frontispiece, and Buckford Dunsland to head of title page. Flyleaves not present. Collated complete and correct running frontis, title page in red and black, epistle dedication, dedication to the reader (verso imprimatur), introductory discourse, then the main text, which has a separate title page dated also 1676. Contemporary calf, somewhat rubbed, a little shaken perhaps, occasional very light mark, overall text very clean and all pages intact. An excellent and universal scholar, an elegant writer, and a very eloquent preacher (Darling). An attractive example of the first edition of this celebrated work, with a good clear impression of the famous history of the Church folding plate. ESTC R12963
