TWO VOLUMES. 8vo. (7.6 x 5.3 inches). FIRST EDITION of Through the Looking Glass, Early edition of Alice's adventures in Wonderland (Sixteenth Thousand). This is the first issue of Looking-Glass, with the misprint "wade" for "wabe" in the second line of "Jabberwocky" on page 21. ------ Both volumes Illustrated throughout with forty-two (Alice) and fifty (looking Glass) line engravings by John Tenniel. Original tissue guard over the frontis in Looking glass still present. Some of the usual marking and thumbing to some of the pages in both volumes, but not seriously, and early previous owner name, dated 1869, in Alice and a neat three line inscription, dated Christmas 1871, in Looking Glass. Overall very good copies in recent full red morocco leather bindings. Single gilt ruled borders on boards. Spines with raised bands, the compartments ruled, lettered and decorated with gilt stamps of The Mad Hatter and playing cards. All edges gilt. Black endpapers. The original publishers red cloth front and rear boards , both sets marked and darkened to areas but included for completeness, have been bound in at the rear of each volume. Cloth with gilt circular devices on boards, each with a different character from the books inside, and triple gilt ruled borders. A very good attractive pair of books, both with two previous female owners names and inscriptions dated in the relevant years of publication, to the half titles. Both volumes housed in a felt-lined, cloth covered slip case with a pull tie. An attractive set.
