Alfred Heaton Cooper was among the first of many Victorian painters to illustrate the natural beauty of the Lake District landscape. Emerging from humble beginnings in Bolton he won a scholarship to Westminster School of Art where he came under the influence of the Barbizon School. He developed a unique style of his own and began a prolific career based finally in the Lake District. He illustrated many books including the popular A & C Black tourist guidebooks for Britain & Europe.
