Book Description

Quarto, second, expanded edition, ff [xvi], 258 [sic] [1]. First and last leaf blank, occasional woodcut capital. Black letter throughout. In this example the mispagination is different from that in ESTC, being much more in error viz: folio 55 misnumbered 57; 69 unnumbered; 71 misnumbered 72; paper flaw to 72; 73 misnumbered 74; 79 misnumbered 80; 84 misnumbered 86; 86 misnumbered 84; 124 misnumbered 123; 128 misnumbered 127; 143 misnumbered 115; 158 misnumbered 185; 171 misnumbered 145; 173 misnumbered 151; 179 misnumbered 159; 199 misnumbered 299; 208 misnumbered 206; 220 misnumbered 219; 222 misnumbered 221; 225 misnumbered 226; 231 misnumbered 31; 237 misnumbered 239; 250 misnumbered 251; 253 misnumbered 235; 258 misnumbered 237; 259 misnumbered 258. Perhaps this indicates an early issue, before later corrections. Very good-quality recent full cinnamon-brown calf, with contrasting label, gilt bands, gilt boards, and marbled endpapers. Armorial bookplate of Augustus Henry Duke of Grafton, with the motto et ducum et pretium recti to front paste-down. Note in eighteenth century hand to fly-leaf ‘NB The Office etc of Pouralles ranger described on page 186’, with the relevant pages marked accordingly in brown ink; occasional much earlier annotations in English to margin in a secretarial hand in black ink.
Dealer Notes
The Duke of Grafton was an interesting man. He was the descendant of King Charles II, through an illegitimate (but recognised line). A supporter of William Pitt, sympathetic to the American cause, and liberal in his views, he became Prime-Minister 1768-1770, unusually for a Duke. He divorced whilst in office, but later in life he became a Unitarian. His ex-libris is rather uncommon. This is the second, expanded edition, produced after Manwood s death, but more useful in the extra range of material covered. ESTC suggests that it may have been printed by Islip. A very attractive and interesting item, unusually with the bookplate of a prime minister.
Author MANWOOD, Isaac. [Prime Minister Augustus Henry, Duke of Grafton, also known as Augustus FITZROY].
