Demar states “It might however be expected that any author who undertook the task should previously inform himself respecting the present state of coal mines, and collect the various effects relating to the formation and accumulation of noxious airs. It might also be expected that he should be fully acquainted with those parts of chemical and general science which are connected with his subject.”
