The York Antiquarian Book Seminar (YABS) is an annual three day seminar held just before our York National Book Fair in September. This seminar is perfect for any aspiring book dealers who need an introduction of where to start and how to do well. Read below to find out more.

YABS are taking a break and we will return in 2021.

The PBFA are delighted to support The York Antiquarian Book Seminar (YABS).

Once again the PBFA are sponsoring two full scholarships at YABS worth £525 each. The course fees cover three days of lectures and demonstrations, instructional materials, a bookshop tour, daily lunches and refreshments and a Wednesday farewell dinner.

The applicants for the two scholarships may either be current PBFA members, or would-be PBFA members who potentially fulfil the requirements for PBFA membership. If you know an aspiring bookseller for whom the course would provide a kick-start into the profession please let them know.

The scholarship winners will have access to special offers to help their book selling businesses including discounted software and website packages from Bibliopolis and a free years subscription to ViaLibri Premier Services, and more besides. Also included are several free optional extra add-ons in the two days following the seminar. These include a fascinating tour of York Minster Cathedral library, a tour of the working print room at the English Department of York University, and of course an invitation to attend the pre-York Bookfair bookseller's party at Ken Spelman's.

If you are a PBFA bookseller intending to exhibit at the York National Bookfair (which is held just after the seminar) free secure stock storage is is included at Stadium Self Storage, five minutes drive from the racecourse.

The seminar is designed for people of all levels of expertise, from beginners to those with years of experience. Lectures and subjects covered include: selling to institutional libraries, cataloguing ephemera, selling books on consignment, avoiding fakes and forgeries, creating your own website, book photography, databases and running an open shop.
