Dealer Notes
This is the portfolio of 70 etchings published to accompany H S Nichols' large Holland Paper edition of Victor Hugo's Twelve Romances. From the library of Estelle Doheny (1875 - 1958), the American philanthropist and book collector, the wife of oil baron Edward Doheny. In 1983, 25 years after her death, her vast book collection was able to be sold and realised a total of over $37 million in 6 auction sales in New York and London during 1987, 1988 and 1989. One of the most remarkable 'single owner' dispersals, still remembered fondly by more senior collectors and booksellers. A 'Doheny copy' is a guarantee of quality.
