Robert MacBryde [1914-1966] Scottish painter and set designer. One of the 'Two Roberts' the other being his fellow Scottish painter, Robert Colquhoun. They made no attempt to disguise their homosexuality in an age when it was a criminal offence. Two letters both to Michael Rothenstein, [1908-1993] artist and printmaker no date but the letters give the address as Lewes where the Roberts moved in 1947 and left around two years later. To begin with here is the biographical note you asked for - you will be able to arrange it better in adequate English (I have too little) for me....I am sorry that we have been such a nuisance to you but you will endeavour to remedy this....Robert MacBryde The three page biographical note in Macbryde's hand is included. Parents - on mother's side Highland and on father's side Irish - father was a tanner and both painted at weekends. After leaving school I was apprenticed to boot and shoe trade and studied in evenings at Ayr Academy. Ill health took me from the shoe factory.... The second letter also from Sussex We have been also a little time in Scotland and our mail and affairs a little mixed up....I have some new paintings here in Lewes so perhaps I can have them photographed on the spot and send them off immediately to you....
