Book Description
London: Strahan & Co, 1872-3, Later Edition in full morocco leather by Ramage bookbinders. Contemporary full green morocco, with gilt titles and gilt and red morocco tooling to the spines. Five raised bands. All page edges gilt. inner gilt fillet and the bookbinder’s stamp to the bottom of the front paste down. Engraved frontispiece portrait of Tennyson in first volume. Publisher's device on each title page. Decorative head-, tailpieces and initials. This work, the Imperial Library Edition of Tennyson's Works in six volumes, was published by Strahan & Co. in 1872-1873, and contains important additions such as: "The Third of February 1852," "Literary Squabbles," and "The Spiteful Letter." A set of six volumes incorporating the Complete Works of Tennyson. Marking the first appearance of the "Idylls" in 1873. All uniformly bound in green morocco. Six volume set including: Vol I – (xi) 374pp; 1872 (Strahan) with portrait frontis. Half title page states "The Works of Tennyson in six Volumes"; Vol II – vi, [ii], 293pp; 1872; Vol III – vi, 287pp, 1872; Vol IV – [iv], 311pp 1872; Vol V – [ii], 274pp 1873; Vol VI – [ii], 294pp + [iv, Epilogue To the Queen], 1873. Vols 5 and 6 marking first appearance of the "Idylls" as a complete set; a later edition was done by King in 1877 in 7 volumes. Approximately 8 ¼ inches tall.

Spine – good condition – clean and bright with five raised bands, red and gilt decoration, some age toning.
Joints – good condition – gentle wear and some loss of colour.
Corners – good condition – gentle wear.
Boards – good condition – some marks and scratches, boards raised up to a dome shape with gilt and red decoration in the corners.
Page edges – good condition – all gilt.

Hinges – good condition – all sound save Vol II strained next to the title page but holding strongly.
Paste downs – good condition – marbled, gilt fillet to three edges front and rear with the Ramage mark to the front paste down.
End papers – good condition – marbled.
Title – good condition – lightly tanned and foxed.
Pages – good condition – some tanning and foxing but generally clean.
Binding – good condition – attractive and complete.
