After translating horace in 1850, he published his first novel, Digby Grand, in 1853, which was a huge success. He went on to publish twenty-one novels. Whyte-Melville was a popular writer in the main genres, that of historical romance and hunting. He became a popular writer about hunting with most of his heroes or heroines active or would-be hunters. His work was said to inspire the novels of Henry Hawley Smart and the verse of John Woodcock Graves. Uniformly bound in half calf bindings. Externally, generally smart with rubbing and bumping to all volumes. Some sunning and wear to spines. Pages generally bright with foxing generally to the start and end of volumes. Approximately 7 inches tall.
