Whitelocke was sent to Buenos Aires to rescue General Beresford and his men who had surrendered to the Spanish. He mismanaged the campaign and lost a large part of his force forcing him to evacuate Buenos Aires and Montevideo. Whitelocke was found guilty and cashiered.
