Book Description

5 issues of 'The Sleeper' magazine, the 'Gazette of 923 TSC RE Unit' at P.O.W Military Camp Staunton Harold Hall Leicestershire. This in-house publication on typed-copied paper has 20 or more pages in each issue, including full page illustrations in black and white. Small 4to paperbound in general good condition. Two covers in colour. The contents of No1 are a bit faded. The issues are No1 April 1944, Dec Christmas No 1944, No18 Sept 1945, No19 October 1945, Dec Christmas No 1945 (the last published). All edited by Major J.W. Reed RE. A scarce set.
Dealer Notes
All the covers and cartoon illustrations in the issues are by 'JEN' better known as Sheffield artist Louise Jennings 1919-2018, who was 26 when as a man, she served in the Battle of Dunkirk and was evacuated from France in 1940. Born in 1919 as Robert Jennings, following the death of his wife, he underwent full gender reassignment surgery in the 1990s while in his 70's and became the artist Louise Jennings. Her paintings have been exhibited in multiple places including the Graves Gallery in her home city of Sheffield.
