FIRST EDITION. 8vo. (7.6 x 5.4 inches). Engraved frontis by Charles Kerry, with original tissue paper guard still present. Correct first edition text errors, with page number 138 on the contents leaf missing the 8, and wishes misspelled on page 56 as "w shed". A previous owner's name on the blank rear of the frontispiece and another name neatly erased, but overall a fine, bright and clean copy in a fine recent binding of full burgundy morocco. Spine with raised bands, the compartments ruled, lettered and decorated in gilt. Single gilt ruled border on the boards. Top edge gilt. The original publisher's burgundy cloth front board has been bound in at the rear of the book. A fine first edition of the second novel featuring Sherlock Holmes.
