Book Description
Printed for G. Robinson, London, 1776, 1st edition. Later quarter leather binding with marbled boards. Five raised bands to spine, double horizontal gilt rules either side of bands. Gilt lettering on red leather patch to compartment two. 7ins x 4.5ins (18cm x 11cm),[vi], xxiv, thereafter unpaginated (but approx 220pp) plus two folding maps. Text is arranged alphabetically by place name in double column format. The first map is "A general map of North America, from the latest observations" it is dated 1776. The second is "West Indies , from the best authorities, by T. Bowen". [Thomas Bowen, 1733-1790, engraver, map-maker and print seller]. The second map has a short tear. All of the contents including the maps are quite browned. A great deal of information is contained in this gazetteer which was published in the same year as the American Declaration of Independence.
