First edition. The catalogue of a remarkable collection of books, manuscripts, photographs, and other artefacts relating to East Africa, The Sudan, Egypt, Arabia and the Indian Ocean, which were collected by Humphrey Winterton over a period of nearly 40 years and sold at Sotheby’s in 2003. The catalogue is prefaced by an introduction by G.S.P. Grenville-Freeman and ‘A Note on the Catalogue’ by Sotheby’s, which explains the structure and organisation of the catalogue, describing it as ‘the most important and finest library of its kind to come to auction within living memory’ (p. 11). The catalogue of nearly 1,000 lots is followed by an index and an appendix, listing unnamed items included in the multiple lots in the sale.
