Book Description
First edition. Two volumes. complete. Undated in publication details, but Vol.2 ends with correspondence quoted from 1924. HB. Uniform orange-red cloth with gilt titles to spine and crest to front. No dustjackets. Volume 1: 20th June 1685 to 3rd August 1918. xx, 440pp. Volume II: 4th August 1914 to 31st December 1918, with index. xix, 454pp. Quartos. Each volume has numerous illustrations including plates (some as colour illustrations, including watercolours by Stanley Barwell), folding maps, and sketch maps in text. All plates are present except for plate 2 in Vol.1, a portrait of General Stuart which the author was unable to locate- the page bears a printed note to this effect. These volumes were donated by Major F. de Winton Garman to the Sheringham (Norfolk) Branch of the British Legion: the front free endpapers have presentation inscriptions in beautiful calligraphy. A donation will be made to the British Legion Poppy Appeal by David Ford Books from sale of these books. Good condition overall. Covers are bright with some rubbing & bumping to cloth edges including small tear at spine, generally clean with small stain to one, vol 2 has patchy fading to cloth on back cover. Bindings sound. Page faces are generally clean, with occasional foxing, heavier to prelims, and quite heavy browning to endpapers; closed edges foxed.
