Book Description
Presumed First edition; undated but probably c.1880 from contents. HB. A luxury full leather binding on bevelled wooden boards with brass edges and two brass clasps, the brass surfaces being decorated with floral motifs. The leather has gilt decorations to the spine (with 5 raised bands) and front, with gilt images of figures and trees to the front and back boards. All page edges gilt. Brown coated endpapers. With colour lithographed title page (as well as letterpress title page), which shows Henry M. Stanley, opposite tissue-guarded colour lithograph frontispiece of a jungle scene. There are 4 more colour lithographs in plates, as well as various b&w lithographs in plates throughout. x, 948pp, large quarto. Very Good condition. Spine has been relaid Covers largely bright, with some greening (verdigris) to brass edges. some small worm holes to rear board. The page binding is very sound (for such a heavy book), and the pages generally clean, a few light marks, and a little spotting and browning at ends. No inscriptions.
