Book Description

ESTC T70596. Sandford and Merton was first published 1783-89. This is the seventh edition, in the same three decker format; it continued to pass through innumerable editions into the 20th century. Leslie Stephen called it 'still among the best children's books in the language'. In more recent times, Percy Muir styled it 'a feast of nausea', but Harvey Darton emphasised that 'it is a great work, in its queer little way'. The 18th century editions are now hard to come by; even the Osborne Collection had no complete set before 1801.
