Book Description

FIRST EDITION. 8vo, pp. 317, [3]. Original black cloth, mustard title panel to spine. Lean to spine, bruised and soiled. Edges dusty, occasional finger marks, shaken, but binding holding firm. In the striking original dust jacket: grubby, edges and extremities creased, nicked and chipped, numerous closed tears with amateur taping to rear, small loss to top edge of front panel. Still, the art work retains its dramatic charm. A robust copy of Cannan’s unusual mountaineering thriller.
Dealer Notes
“Small, slight, and fair, with myopic grey-green eyes, Cannan lived [and wrote] enthusiastically“ (ODNB). Joanna Cannan (1896-1961) was a prolific British novelist, known for her pony and detective titles; both writing and mountaineering ran in the family. Her 1931 novel Ithuriel's Hour is also set in the mountains.
The Hills Sleep On has a printed dedication to her son, Denis Pullein-Thomas.
