Book Description
16mo, 10.5 x 16cm, i – x, 11 - 480. nd. [1908 but with 1900 preface date]. Publisher's original blue cloth binding with ornate floral blocking and publisher's monogram to the upper board, and gilt titles to the spine. Top edge gilt. White endpapers blocked in light blue with a framing device around the publisher's monogram. Some light rubbing and tiny marks. Conan Doyle refused to pass this, the first issue of the second English edition, for publication because it reprinted the first edition without any of the later revisions (hence a return to the preface date of 1900), it had no map, and he disliked the "Sir" Arthur Conan Doyle spine title. His strongest objection was to the use of his portrait as frontispiece, supplanting that of Lord Roberts used in all impressions of the first edition. Although a number of copies had been bound and dispatched, distribution was subsequently halted and the edition destroyed.
