The US born English illustrator, Florence Kate Upton (1872-1922) found inspiration for her Golliwogg books in penny wooden dolls and an old toy found in her attic. The thirteen Golliwogg adventures were published 1895-1909 and the verses were written by her mother, Bertha (1849-1912).
