FIRST EDITION. Oblong 4to. 11 x 8.5 inches. 64 pp. Publisher’s advertisement on verso of first free endpaper. Illustrated by 31 chromolithograph plates, including title page and by other drawings in text. Bound in original stiff card with cloth spine and pictorial front board. Decorated green endpapers. Extremities a little worn and small closed tears to lower margins of pp. of several leaves not affecting image or text. These have been professionally repaired; otherwise a very good copy.
Dealer Notes
The US born English cartoonist, Florence Kate Upton (1872-1922) found inspiration for her Golliwogg books in penny wooden dolls and an old toy found in her attic. The thirteen Golliwogg adventures were published 1895-1909 and the verses were written by her mother, Bertha (1849-1912).
