‘This edition of the Jew of Malta has been planned by C. Sandford and F.J. Newbery and printed for THE GOLDEN HOURS PRESS at the Chiswick Press. The type used is “Bembo,” revived from an early Aldine fount. The paper is pure rag handmade. By arrangement with the Clarendon Press the text used is that of the Standard Oxford “Marlowe,” edited by C.F. Tucker Brooke, following in the main the 1633 quarto version, which though corrupt and itself possibly only a reprint revised from an earlier edition, is nevertheless the only text preserved. The play was probably completed in 1590, a year or two after Doctor Faustus. These two were the most popular of Marlowe’s compositions. Of this volume 250 copies have been printed, only 200 being for sale.’ A tipped in note below this statement reads, ‘This edition was originally planned and printed for The Golden Hours Press and 200 copies were made available for sale. of this number a balance remains and these have been taken over by Hollis & Carter Ltd [...] who now offer the original text in a less elaborate binding.
